Wales fly-half Sam Costelow has been ruled out of Friday's Six Nations game away to Ireland after failing to recover in time from an ankle injury.
Costelow hobbled off during Wales' 26-23 home loss to Scotland in the third round of the tournament, but he could return to face Italy in his team's final game on 14 March.
His absence against the Irish in Dublin could mean a swift return to the starting line-up for Dan Edwards, who was dropped against Scotland after playing in the previous seven matches.
Jarrod Evans is also an option for Wales in the number 10 shirt, with coach Steve Tandy due to name his team on Wednesday.
"Sam is not quite ready for this week. We're hoping he will play a part in the Six Nations, but not this week," assistant coach Matt Sherratt said Monday.
"There's a real tussle going on with the 10s at the moment.
"It's up to the two remaining for this week now to fight it out to start at the weekend."
