Kenya’s hopes of getting some top class Sevens action ahead of the Olympics took a massive blow this week when they were forced to withdraw from the Dubai Sevens because of “logistical issues”.
The Shujaa, who beat the Blitzboks in the African Cup qualifiers to secure their place at Paris in 2024’s Olympic Games, now face an uncertain path in preparation before the Olympics.
While no explanation was given, the team has struggled with a lack of sponsorship and funds from the Kenya Rugby Union, and it is believed this may be the cause that both the mens and womens teams did not travel to Dubai.
Kenya would have competed in the International Invitational tournament in Dubai - a second-tier tournament alongside the main SVNS tournament that the Blitzboks take part in. Normally several international sides send their younger players to play either in national teams or invitational teams in that tournament. The Blitzboks have sent their Academy team to take part in the tournament.
“We regret to inform you that the Kenya Sevens men and women national squads who will not be able to honour their fixtures at the 2023 Dubai 7s,” Kenya Rugby Union Chairman Alexander K. Mutai said in a statement.
“The teams were slated to play in the International Invitational Category in Dubai. Unfortunately, logistical challenges have negatively impacted their travel itinerary, rendering the trip to Dubai impossible at this point in time.”
Kenya will take part in the newly formed Challenger Series after being relegated to the second tier after the series was cut to 12 teams.
