Blitzboks make it two from two
The Springbok Sevens team made it two from two with a comprehensive 35-14 win over Canada to set up a pool showdown with arch rivals New Zealand at the Dubai Sevens on Saturday night.
The Blitzboks followed up their 22-14 win over Samoa in the opening round with the big win, scoring three first half tries to lead 21-0 at the break.
Shilton van Wyk, Christie Grobbelaar and Selvyn Davids made the opening scoring successes, and were followed up in the second half by tries by a brace by Quewin Nortje to secure the big win and give themselves a chance of topping the group.
New Zealand had two narrow wins in their pool games, defeating Canada 26-21 and Samoa 14-12 in highly contested matches.
The Blitzboks will face New Zealand at 6.34pm, with the match live on SuperSport.
Earlier they recorded a hard-fought, gritty 22-14 win over a tricky Samoa side.
While Samoa scored in the first minute through Faafoi Falaniko, the Blitzboks regrouped from the early setback to hit back two minutes later through Christie Grobbelaar and then again through their hotstepper, Rosko Specman.
Before the half was over, Shilton van Wyk added his name to the scoresheet and gave them a handy 17-7 lead.
Samoa hit back in the second half, threatening to make it a contest as Taunuu Niulevaea crossed the tryline to narrow the gap.
But a later try by Impi Visser settled the game and gave them a morale-boosting opening victory in the two day tournament.
