Hogg was involved in a tussle with Le Roux in the first half and social media users suggested camera angles showed him biting Le Roux's arm.

However, the evidence is hardly clear and could be seen as just a bad camera angle.

Still, the incident is so serious that Hogg felt the need to come out and put out a statement through the Lions media team denying the incident.

“Following speculation that has surfaced online, I would like to categorically deny any foul play in last night’s game. I would never bite an opponent and I am annoyed and upset by this unsubstantiated accusation. I’ve always been proud of playing rugby in the spirit of the game,” Hogg said in the statement released on Sunday morning.

"Respect to the Springboks for their deserved win yesterday. The squad is hurting after last night’s defeat, but it’s all to play for next week. It’s going to be a cup final and everyone’s going to be up for it."

While no citings had been reported by Sunday morning, there were also several questions around an incident of Lions lock Maro Itoje, who was caught with his knee on Damian de Allende’s neck in television replays.

Springbok winger Cheslin Kolbe was also lucky to only be awarded a yellow card for an in-air collision with Lions halfback Conor Murray which could have been a red card if seen differently by officials.

Citings have to be deemed at a red-card level to be instituted and are judged by an independent match official who is not at the ground where the game is being played.
