Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Paris Masters in the second round on Wednesday, losing to American world number 31 Tommy Paul 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-1.
With the exception of a doubles match at Roger Federer's Laver Cup farewell, Nadal had not played since going out in the last 16 of the US Open two months ago.
