Gauff and Muchova returned to the Arthur Ashe Stadium court to resume their clash at around 8.50pm local time following the protest.

The semifinal had been halted with Gauff leading 6-4, 1-0 in the second set when a group of spectators chanting "End fossil fuels" held up play.

One of the protesters glued his feet to the stadium floor, causing the lengthy delay.
