SuperSport has acquired the broadcast rights to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the organising body of women’s professional tennis.

Broadcasts will start up on the SuperSport Tennis channel this weekend with the Italian Open in Rome where defending champion Karolina Pliskova leads the field. The tournament also features fellow top 10 stars Simona Halep, Sofia Kenin, Elina Svitolina, Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic.

This is the only Premier tournament to feature before Roland Garros, which begins on September 27.

“We are thrilled to bring women’s tennis back to broadcast throughout Sub-Saharan Africa,” said WTA President Micky Lawler. “With SuperSport covering 50 countries within the region, fans will once again have the opportunity to witness the exciting action of the WTA Tour on the new SuperSport Tennis channel.”

“This is an exciting acquisition and reaffirms our commitment to women’s sport,” said Gideon Khobane, chief executive of SuperSport. “The women’s game is in a great space and we look forward to bringing the rivalries and storylines to our viewers across the continent.”

Sunday’s first semifinal is scheduled for 12pm, followed by the other at 4pm.

The Monday final is scheduled for 2.30pm.

All the action will be broadcast on the SuperSport Tennis channel (214).
