BIG WEEKEND: Blockbuster sports ahead of the festive period

It’s the BIG WEEKEND on SuperSport this weekend, with action to be had that will satisfy and excite any sports fan. Here is a run down on just some of the great entertainment awaiting you on SuperSport on 16 and 17 December.

RUGBY

More fireworks are expected this coming weekend as the five South African franchises in European competitions are back in action after a massively successful opening round.

In the Investec Champions Cup the DHL Stormers will play host to the defending champion La Rochelle outfit in what is sure to be a clash for the ages.

The Vodacom Bulls, after their rampant win over Saracens, will find the going a little tougher away to Lyon.

The EPCR Challenge Cup will see the Emirates Lions welcome the Newcastle Falcons to always-intimidating Emirates Airline Park, while the action rounds off with a delicious Toyota Cheetahs v Hollywoodbets Sharks derby on Sunday afternoon.

FOOTBALL

Another football blockbuster weekend awaits for SuperSport viewers from local to international leagues.

Saturday 16 December

3pm CAT: Stellenbosch v TS Galaxy – live on SS PSL

All the local roads lead to Durban for a blockbuster Carling Knockout final between Stellenbosch and TS Galaxy.

It’s the first time a long while that the traditional big four will not be featuring in a domestic cup final.

Locals can expect an open and free-flowing game between the two clubs that generally do not hold back.

For Stellies, this is their first ever cup final appearance while TS Galaxy will be in their second domestic final appearance following their success in the Nedbank Cup final in 2019.

10pm CAT: Valencia v Barcelona – live on SS LaLiga

Barcelona will have quickly pick themselves up following a rude awakening against LaLiga surprise package Girona over the weekend.

The Catalan club were shocked 4-2 -- a result that pegged them back in the title chase. They are now fourth on the table behind Atletico, Real Madrid and Girona.

Sunday 17 December

6:30pm CAT: Liverpool v Manchester United – live on SS PL

Man United head to Anfield reeling from a string of uninspiring performances and poor results.

At the back of their minds – they will have memories or the nightmare of their last visit to Anfield – the 7-0 thrashing by Jurgen Klopp’s men.

A similar outcome will only serve to amplify the grumblings among the Man United fans and pressure will intensify on Eric Ten Hag.

On the positive side, Man United have a better record against Liverpool overall – in 62 Premier League meetings, they have triumphed 29 times and lost 19.

Traditionally a blockbuster clash and what a way to end the Premier League match week, live on SuperSport PL at 6:30pm!

10pm CAT: Real Madrid v Villarreal

SuperSport’s blockbuster weekend viewing concludes with a LaLiga clash between Real Madrid and Villarreal on Sunday at 10pm CAT at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Victory for Real will take them back to the top of the table all be it temporarily as current leaders Girona have a game on Monday against Deportivo Alaves.

CRICKET

Both the SA men and women's teams will be in action on the weekend.

The SA women's team will take on Bangladesh in an ODI on Saturday, 16 December (2pm CAT), while the Men's team will tackle India in an ODI on December 17 (10am CAT).
