Magesi FC racked up a third straight win in the Betway Premiership when they defeated Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday evening.

Dikwena tsa Meetse brought up a hat-trick of victories in the top-flight league for the first time thanks to a second-half strike from substitute Thabang Sibanyoni, with the result lifting them to 11th place on the log – just three points short of the top eight.

As for Stellies, they remain in third place on the log despite suffering a fifth league loss of the campaign.

Magesi had the first real threat on goal, with Kayden Rademeyer sending a left-footed drive just off target in the 19th minute.

However, Stellenbosch dominated the remainder of the first half, with striker Andre De Jong the central figure.

The New Zealander drew a superb save out of Magesi’s Elvis Chipezeze just past the hour mark, with his header from a free kick looking destined for the back of the net until the goalkeeper’s intervention.

A few minutes later De Jong set up Devon Titus for a chance, with the attacker turning and shooting just over the crossbar, before the former player then sent a drive flashing across the face of goal shortly thereafter.

Despite the efforts of De Jong and Stellies, the half closed with the score still 0-0.

Magesi made a double change at the start of the second half, with Mcedi Vandala and Thabang Sibanyoni introduced off the bench.

Sibanyoni then broke the deadlock in the 70th minute, running onto a hopeful ball out of defence from John Mokone before stabbing a shot beyond the reach of Sage Stephens to put Dikwena tsa Meetse 1-0 up.

Stellenbosch responded by sending on Khomotjo Lekoloane, Chumani Butsaka and Godswill Enyinnaya, and they were close to an equaliser on 82 minutes when Titus cut inside from the left and sent a curling effort toward the top corner, only for another fine save from Chipezeze to ensure Dikwena held on for the win.

Stellenbosch will next be in action in the CAF Confederation Cup when they host Egyptian giants Zamalek on Wednesday 2 April, while Magesi are next scheduled to play on Sunday 20 April in a home league clash with TS Galaxy.
