ALL eyes shift to Cairo for a battle between African giants
CAF Champions League: Al Ahly v Orlando Pirates | Saturday 18 January | 18:00 (CAT)
Orlando Pirates play in Egypt for a sixth time in the club’s history on Saturday when they battle African Champions League holders Al Ahly in Cairo for top place in Group C.
It is the last group game for both clubs, who have both made sure of a top two finish in the standings and a berth in the quarterfinals in March.
It just over nine years since the Buccaneers were last in Cairo, upsetting Ahly 4-3 in the second leg of their African Confederation Cup semifinal to advance to the final 5-3 on aggregate.
Pirates had a slender 1-0 lead from the home leg and were 2-0 down in the return in Suez before scoring four times in the second half through Kermit Erasmus, Thamsanqa Gabuza, Thabo Matlaba and the winner five minutes into stoppage time from Thabo Rakhale.
They also beat Al Ahly 3-0 away in the Champions League group competition in 2013, which remains the heaviest home defeat that the Egyptian giants have ever suffered in continental club competition.
ALL bets are off when these two Champions League sides meet
Premier League: Arsenal v Aston Villa | Saturday 18 January | 19:30 (CAT)
Arsenal and Aston Villa face off in a highly anticipated Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium, with both sides aiming to maintain momentum in the second half of the season.
The Gunners have turned the Emirates into a fortress, unbeaten in their last 13 Premier League home matches (W10 D3) since falling 2-0 to Aston Villa in April 2024. Mikel Arteta’s side has been particularly resilient, with their last home defeat prior to this streak coming against the same Villa team. Arsenal will be eager to avoid consecutive home losses against the Villans for the first time since the early 1990s.
Martin Ødegaard has been Arsenal’s creative heartbeat since returning from injury in November, creating 42 chances in all competitions. His recent form has been nothing short of sensational, with 14 chances created in his last two matches alone. Arsenal's ability to convert his creativity into goals will be key in unlocking a resolute Villa defense.
ALL momentum with Napoli after five straight wins
Serie A: Atalanta v Napoli | Saturday 18 January | 21:45 (CAT)
The stakes couldn’t be higher as Serie A title hopefuls Napoli head to Bergamo to face an Atalanta side determined to defend their fortress. Gewiss Stadium will set the stage for a clash of two in-form teams, with Napoli riding the wave of five consecutive wins while Atalanta proudly guard an impressive 15-match unbeaten streak.
Napoli lead the Serie A table by four points over Internazionale and show no signs of slowing down. A win on Saturday would cement their status as favourites for the Scudetto. Atalanta, sitting just behind Inter in third place, have their own aspirations—not only to stay in the Champions League race but also to keep their faint title hopes alive.
Napoli come into this game on the back of a commanding 2-0 win over Hellas Verona, fueled by their electric attacking trio. Romelu Lukaku, who has seven league goals this season, continues to be a thorn in defenders' sides. Meanwhile, Atalanta held Juventus to a gritty 1-1 draw in their last outing, demonstrating the resilience that’s defined their campaign.
The memory of Atalanta’s 3-0 demolition of Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in November will still sting for the visitors. Ademola Lookman’s scintillating brace and Mateo Retegui’s strike sealed the win that night, but Napoli are a different beast now, hungry for revenge and in scintillating form.
Barca ALL set for their first league game of 2025
LaLiga: Getafe v Barcelona | Saturday 18 January | 22:00 (CAT)
The newly crowned champions of the Spanish Super Cup return to league action this weekend and they have a tough task ahead, as they’ll visit one of the trickiest stadiums in LaLiga: the Coliseum of Getafe CF. Barcelona have struggled there in recent seasons, as the Catalan outfit haven’t won at this ground since 2019/20.
In each of the last three seasons, Barça have been held to a draw on their annual visit to Getafe CF, every time a 0-0, while the season before this run, in 2020/21, they lost 1-0. As such, it’s four seasons without a win at the Coliseum for Barcelona, who need three points this time since they’re already six points behind leaders Atlético de Madrid in the title race.
The good news for FC Barcelona is that 2025 has started off in better fashion, as they just won the Spanish Super Cup, comfortably overcoming Athletic Club and Real Madrid. They’ll hope that this means they’ve turned a corner, after ending 2024 with back-to-back defeats at the Estadi Olímpic against CD Leganés and Atlético de Madrid.
