Australian boxing legend, Woodley, passes away
Ray Woodley one of the legends of Australian boxing passed away on Tuesday in a Sydney hospital at the age of 74.
Born on 25 July 1948, Woodley fought as a heavyweight from 1969 to 1985 and finished with a record of 11-12-1.
Ray was never far away from boxing after retiring from the ring as he became an International Boxing Federation supervisor, referee, and judge of world title fights in Australia, America, South Africa, China, South Korea, New Zealand, Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia.
He was also a regular broadcaster and guest on several television networks and was inducted into the Australian Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012.
Wheatley was the editor and publisher of World of Boxing (1992–2013), a record of 21 years of a continuous boxing publication in Australia under the one publisher.
He also published the Title Fight (1997–2007) and The Greatest magazine (three issues).
In 2010, Wheatley became international editor of possibly the leading boxing website, Fightnews.com.
He was also on the IBF ratings committee from 2000.
Wheatley was Australian correspondent for the Fight Fax record book that was published and distributed worldwide during the 1990s by editor Phil Marder.
In 2008 he was in the Queen’s birthday honour list and received the Order of Australia Medal.
