Tszyu secures dominant WBO super welterweight title defence

WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu (24-0; 17) retained his title against Brian Mendoza (22-3; 16) on a 12-round unanimous points decision on Sunday at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Broadbeach, in Queensland, Australia.

There was very little in it through the first six rounds but Tszyu picked up the pace from round seven and dominated to win with scores of 116-111, 116-112, and 117-111.

UNDERCARD

Featherweight Sam Goodman (16-0; 7) outpointed Miguel Flores (25-5-1; 12) over 12 rounds. Goodman scored a knockdown with a shot to the body in the eighth round.

Flores had two points deducted for low blows but was in control throughout.

The scores were 118-107, 120-105, and 120-105.

Heavyweight Toese Vousiutu (6-1; 6) won on a fourth-round knockout over 46-year-old Julius “The Towering Inferno” Long (18-27-1; 14).

ALIMKHANULY UNIFIES WBO/IBF TITLES

In a middleweight unification clash, WBO middleweight champion Janibek “Qazaq Style” Alimkhanuly (15-0; 10) won on a sixth-round technical knockout over IBF middleweight champion Vincenzo “Il Capo” Gualtieri (21-1-1; 7) to unify the titles on Saturday night at Fort Bend Epicenter in Rosenberg, Texas.

Alimkhanuly was in control from the opening bell and, after hurting Gualtieri a number of times in the sixth round, the referee waved the fight off at 1:25 into the round.

BERCHALT WINS IN TWO

Former world champion Miguel “El Alacrán” Berchelt (39-3; 35) stopped Diego “El Profeta” Ruiz (24-8-1; 12) in a lightweight bout on Saturday night at the Poliforum Zamna in Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico.

 Berchelt dominated through rounds one and two before Ruiz withdrew due to a hand injury.

In an IBF flyweight eliminator, Angel Ayala (17-0; 7) won on a 12-round controversial points decision over former world champion Felix “El Gemelo” Alvarado (39-4; 34).

Alvarado appeared to have done enough to take the decision, but all three judges scored it 114-113 in favour of Ayala.

OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALLIST WINS ON A MAJORITY DECISION

Olympic silver medallist, lightweight Keyshawn Davis (10-0; 6) won on a 10-round majority points decision over Nahir Albright (16-3; 7) in the Alimkhanuly-Gualtieri co-feature on Saturday night at Fort Bend Epicenter in Rosenberg, Texas. The scores were 95-95, 96-94, 97-93.

Unbeaten 2020 Olympic super heavyweight silver medallist Richard Torrez Jr. (7-0; 7) won on a second-round stoppage against Tyrrell Anthony Herndon (21-5; 14). The time was 1:26.

TOMMY FURY WINS AGAINST YOUTUBER KSI

In a cruiserweight bout, Tommy Fury (10-0; 4), the younger brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, scored a six-round majority points decision over YouTuber KSI (1-1, 0) on Saturday night at the AO Arena in Manchester, England.

In a poor fight with a lot of clinching, Fury won with sores of 57-57, 57-56, and 57-56.

SOUTH AFRICANS IN ACTION OVERSEAS

On 7 October, South Africa’s Lerato Dlamini won on a majority points decision against Japan’s Tomoki Lameda over 12 rounds in an IBF featherweight title eliminator at the Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan

The scores were Mike Fitzgerald 116-112, Michiaki Someya 113-115, and Fernando Villerael 116-112.

Also on 7 October, South African Johnny Muller (23-11-2; 14) was knocked out in the 10th round by Kem Liungquist (15-0) of Finland at the Arena Naestved, Naestved in Finland in a clash for the IBF International heavyweight title.
