Amakhosi stutter again, Magesi’s drought goes on
Another truncated weekend of Betway Premiership action was headlined by a further stutter from Kaizer Chiefs, while bottom-of-the-log Magesi FC still cannot buy a win.
Chiefs, playing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon, suffered a 1-0 loss against Golden Arrows – with veteran defender Gladwin Shitolo netting for Abafana Bes’thende.
The Durban side broke a three-game winless run in the league, while the Amakhosi suffered a fifth league defeat of the campaign (from 13 matches) and have failed to claim successive victories since they started the season with back-to-back triumphs over Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC.
Sunday’s late game at the Lucas Moripe Stadium saw Sekhukhune United continue their excellent form. Babina Noko defeated 10-man SuperSport United 3-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Andy Boyeli, with the result taking them to a haul of 13 points from the last 15 up for grabs, and third place on the log.
Saturday saw Magesi FC continue their drought, as they lost 1-0 at home to AmaZulu (with a second-half strike from Bongani Zungu deciding the match) to rack up a ninth successive league outing without a win, and remain bottom of the log.
Meanwhile, Cape Town City’s momentum (they had claimed back-to-back wins over Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates) was brought to a shuddering halt by a 1-0 loss at Marumo Gallants, who snapped a four-game winless run thanks to Edgar Manaka’s early penalty.
The Betway Premiership will continue with five matches next weekend: Cape Town City v Richards Bay, SuperSport United v Polokwane City, Golden Arrows v TS Galaxy, Chippa United v Marumo Gallants, and Kaizer Chiefs v Sekhukhune United.
