Poor WP smashed by Dolphins

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins crushed the World Sports Betting Western Province by eight wickets and 53 balls to spare in a crucial CSA T20 Challenge match at Six Gun Grill Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors reached 99 for two after 11.1 overs to secure a bonus-point after dismissing the home side for just 96 in 17 overs after Kyle Verreynne had won the toss and elected to bat first.

Western Province, who have now failed to win a match in their last five outings, collapsed from 72 for three to 96 all out, losing seven wickets for just 24 runs as poor shot-selection and consistent bowling lines contributed to a disastrous batting display in front of a sparse Newlands crowd.

Khaya Zondo (35) and Grant Roloefsen (21) put the chase beyond doubt with an opening stand of 57 from 40 deliveries with Zondo cracking three boundaries and three sixes, one of which was a paddle over the keeper’s head, from 23 deliveries while Roelofsen, played the anchor role, striking two fours from his 19 balls.

But Zondo looked to play the paddle shot once too often, finally nicking one off to Verreynne behind the stumps from the bowling of Beuran Hendricks (4-0-22-1).

Roloefsen, looking to put his foot down, only managed to knock a short-pitched delivery straight to Eddie Moore at short mid-wicket off the bowling of Wesley Bedja (3-0-26-1).

Jon-Jon Smuts (16 not out) and Marques Ackerman (17 not out), needed just a further 18 balls to take their side home with an unbeaten stand of 30 with Smuts striking one boundary in his 16 balls while Ackerman looked to finish early, striking two fours from just nine balls.

DECENT START COMES UNDONE

Earlier, WP had made a decent start with Tony de Zorzi (22) and Moore (19) adding 45 for the first wicket, from 28 deliveries.

De Zorzi struck one four and two sixes from his 15 balls while Moore struck two fours and a six from 14 deliveries.

However, Moore looked to chance his arms once too often and found Prenalen Subrayen at mid-off from the bowling of Eathan Bosch (2-0-14-1).

De Zorzi followed shortly thereafter, pulling Daryn Dupavillon (3-0-13-1) straight to Ackerman on the square-leg fence.

Verreynne lasted 12 deliveries without finding the fence, only to hand Ackerman a catch at long-on from the bowling of Smuts (3-0-11-2).

Jonathan Bird (15) struck one four in his 13-ball stay before offering Ackerman another catch on the deep mid-wicket fence, this time from Andile Simelane (3-0-12-3).

Simelane then had George Linde caught and bowled with his very next delivery before Smuts removed Anke Nyaku, caught by Bosch on the long-on fence.

Subrayen (4-0-18-3) then cleaned up the Western Province tail as he had Kyle Simmonds (3) stumped by Roelofsen, Bedja caught in the deep by Ackerman and then clean-bowling Hendricks (8) to bring the home side’s innings to a premature close.

The win moves the Dolphins onto 32 points but remain in third place behind the DP World Lions, who secured a bonus-point 10-wicket triumph over the Auto Investment North West Dragons to remain second on 40 points.

The victory does open up a gap to WP – a massive nine points with just two rounds left to play.

The Dolphins host the AET Tuskers in Durban next Friday before ending off the league phase against the table-topping Dafabet Warriors in Gqeberha on Sunday.

Province will be hoping for some favours as they face off against their neighbours, the Gbets Rocks on Friday before completing their campaign against the Momentum Multiply Titans on Sunday, a game that could effectively be a quarterfinal.
