Stoinis century sees Lucknow beat Chennai Super Kings

A sensational, unbeaten century from Australian all rounder Marcus Stoinis steered the Lucknow Super Giants to a thrilling six-wicket victory against the Chennai Super Kings in their IPL match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday.

Replying to CSK’s imposing total of 210-4, Stoinis – promoted to number three – responded with a brilliant 124 not out from just 63 balls with 13 fours and six sixes in carefully paced and controlled innings in which he attacked at critical times.

Trinidadian Nicholas Pooran hammered 34 from 15 balls (3x4, 2x6) before miscuing a drive against the excellent Matheesha Pathirana (2-35) to mid off but his contribution was critical to the win.

Deepak Hooda smashed 17 from six balls (2x4, 1x6) to confirm the win when 27 runs were required off the final 10 balls and 17 off the final over bowled by Bangladeshi seamer Mustafizur Rahman whose first three balls were clubbed for 6,4,4 straight over his head by Stoinis.

Earlier, a scintillating century from CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad guided his team to a daunting total of 210-4 after being asked to bat first but it wasn’t enough.

Gaikwad has endured a lean tournament so far after assuming the captaincy from MS Dhoni but thundered back to form with a masterclass in T20 batting as he rasped a dozen fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 108 from just 60 deliveries.

Shivam Dube was even more impressive during a fourth wicket partnership of 104 from 47 balls as the home team moved from an iffy 101-3 after 11.5 overs to a score they will be confident of defending in familiar conditions.

Dube blasted three consecutive sixes off medium pacer Yash Thakur on his way to 66 from only 27 balls which included three boundaries and seven sixes before he was run out in the final over.

The teams had identical records with four wins and three losses from their seven matches so far before the fixture but LSG climb from fifth place to third and into a share of second place alongside Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders.

CSK drop into fifth place on the log with eight points from eight games.
