The Delhi Capitals Women secured a comfortable 25-run victory over the Gujarat Giants Women at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday evening to go top of the Women’s Premier League.

Having been sent in to bat first by Beth Mooney, the Capitals posted a very competitive 163 for eight with captain Meg Lanning striking a 41-ball 55.

In reply, Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav each claimed three wickets to restrict the winless Giants to 138 for eight.

Lanning was imperious with the bat, striking six boundaries and a six, while receiving support from Alice Capsey (27) and Annabel Sutherland (20).

Capsey struck five fours in her 17-ball innings while Sutherland clubbed two fours and a six from 12 deliveries.

Maghna Singh (4-0-37-4) kept the Giants in the match with her medium-pace bowling, removing the top-order trio of Lanning, caught at cover-point by Dayalan Hemalatha, Shafali Verma (13), caught by Laura Wolvaardt at square leg and Capsey, caught at backward point by Tanuja Kanwar.

Singh also picked up the late wicket of Yadav, trapped in front for just five. Ashleigh Gardner (4-0-37-2) nabbed the wickets of Jonassen (11) and Arundhati Reddy (5) while Kanwar (4-0-31-1) and Mannat Kashyap (3-0-16-1) picked up a wicket apiece.

GIANTS STRUGGLE IN CHASE

Lanning was monstrous in the third-wicket stand of 47 from just 34 balls with Jemimah Rodrigues (7), scoring 40 of the runs herself.

The Gujarat Giants’ chase struggled to get off the ground as the Delhi bowlers consistently picked up wickets.

Wolvaardt was back in the hut early, clean-bowled by Shikha Pandey (4-0-28-1) without scoring.

Jonassen (4-0-22-3) grabbed the wickets of Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield (15) in the fifth over, trapping Mooney (12) in front and having Litchfield caught by Sutherland at mid-off.

Yadav then got into the act with her slow left-arm orthodox, having Veda Krishnamurthy (12) caught at backward point by Pandey before trapping Kathryn Bryce in front for three.

With the pressure building on the Giants and the rate climbing near to 15 runs to the over, Jonassen had Gardner stumped by Bhatia before Yadav had Tanuja Kanwar (13) caught at short third-man by Verma.

Gardner tried valiantly to keep the chase in tact with a fighting 40 from 31 balls which included five boundaries and a six but once Jonassen pounced, the chase was all but over.

With the Giants requiring 33 off the final over of the match, Singh (10 not out) and Sayali Satghare (7 not out) managed just seven runs from Pandey’s over.

Gujarat remain without a win in four matches and are rooted to the foot of the WPL table but will have a chance to rectify matters when they take on the Royals Challengers Bangalore, whom have lost two on the trot, on Wednesday.

Delhi’s third win in a row moves them above the Mumbai Indians on net run-rate. The pair face off on Tuesday in a top-of-the-log clash.
