Maritzburg United have secured the capture of former Free State Stars winger Yusuf Jappie, the club have confirmed.

The 24-year-old moves to KwaZulu-Natal following Stars’ relegation from the Absa Premiership last season, when he was one of their bright lights in an otherwise dismal season.

“Yusuf Jappie has signed a two-year deal with an option for a further year,” Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia said in a statement.

“There is no doubt that Yusuf is a quality player, with a lot of potential. The coach believes Yusuf is a player he can work with and help to fully realise that potential.

“He has an excellent left foot, he has plenty of pace, and is a versatile player who can operate on the left or right. We believe he'll add great options in attack and we welcome Yusuf to Pietermaritzburg and the Team of Choice family.”

Jappie, a product of the Ajax Cape Town and BidVest Wits development, made his senior debut for Milano United in the National First Division in the 2015/16 season.

He moved to Lamontville Golden Arrows two years’ later, and spent last season at Free State Stars.

He has four goals in 66 appearances across all clubs.

United, who battled relegation last season, have also signed defender Kwanda Mngonyama, striker Judas Moseamedi and midfielder Phumalani Ntshangase ahead of the new campaign.

They begin their season away at provincial rivals Golden Arrows on August 4.
