Cape Town City are hoping to finalise the signature of former South Africa international Thulani Serero, coach Muhsin Ertugral has revealed.

Serero had been training with the club over the last weeks and flew back to the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday to tie up loose ends after playing there for the last five seasons.

The 34-year-old has been without a club since leaving Khorfakkan in June.

Ertugral said he was hoping that City chairman John Comitis could finalise the deal next week but it would not come before Saturday’s Betway Premiership clash away against Orlando Pirates in Soweto.

If he does join City, it would be a return to the Mother City for Serero, who left Ajax Cape Town in 2011 after helping them to the verge of the league title.

Serero spent six seasons at Ajax Amsterdam after his move from South Africa and then three full campaigns at Vitesse Arnhem in the Dutch league.

He moved from there to the UAE in 2019 to play at Al Jazeera.

Cape Town City are in need of a boost after picking up only one point in their last four league matches and slipping out of the top eight after Chippa United beat them 2-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Tuesday.
