For a second successive weekend, Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United go up against each other, playing again at the Peter Mokaba Stadium

Chiefs hammered SuperSport 4-0 last Saturday night in the Carling Knockout first round in what was a record win for AmaKhosi over Matsatsantsa and now the two sides clash again in the Betway Premiership.

It will be 83rd meeting between the two clubs, who first took on each other in the 1990 season in the old National Soccer League.

SuperSport.com looks back at the five most memorable clashes between the two over the last 34 years of rivalry:

1998: SuperSport 2 Chiefs 4

A week before they took on Mamelodi Sundowns in the Rothmans Cup final, Chiefs laid down a marker in a six-goal thriller in the league on November 22. They were a little fortunate in the beginning when Marc Batchelor escaped a red card after an elbow into the face of SuperSport defender Andrew Tucker before Batchelor himself converted a penalty to start the goal deluge. There were two superb efforts from Michael Araujo for SuperSport while Thabo Mooki ensured it was 2-2 at halftime. Chiefs, who had made five changes to their line-up from their previous outing against AmaZulu, dominated the second half with Siyabonga Nomvete and veteran Doctor Khumalo adding to the scoreline.

1999: Kaizer Chiefs 1 SuperSport United 2

The BoB Save Super Bowl final at Soccer City saw SuperSport, coached by Roy Matthews, go ahead in the first half as Thomas Madigage found the net near the end of the half. Striker Glen Salmon, playing his last game for the club after being sold to NAC Breda in the Netherlands, added a second to make it 2-0 with 13 minutes to go. Chiefs had been favourites for the title but only got a consolation in the last minute from the penalty spot, converted by Pollen Ndlanya. One sour note was a volley of missiles from disappointed Chiefs fans in the stands, one of which struck and injured Raymond Seopa as he was warming up to come on late in the contest.

2004: SuperSport United 3 Kaizer Chiefs 0

As the league season neared an end, Chiefs were headed to the title while SuperSport chasing a top three finish. They had a young line-up and makeshift defence for their meeting at Loftus Versfeld but made sure of a double in the two league fixtures of the season against Chiefs. Daniel Matsau picked up a rebound after Sibusiso Mahlangu’s effort hit the woodwork to make it 1-0 in the 15th mminute, followed six minutes later when Cavaan Sibeko set up Tsweu Mokoro for a 2-0 lead. It was 3-0 before halftime as Swazi international Dennis Masina banged home a long range screamer. SuperSport were down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes after Zimbabwean fullback Nicolas Chazika was sent off but Chiefs did not threaten a comeback.

2013: Kaizer Chiefs 1 SuperSport United 0

Chiefs claimed the 2013 Nedbank Cup at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium with a narrow 1-0 victory over defending champions SuperSport in the final as Bernard Parker grabbed the only goal in extra-time. Although it was no classic game, it was significant in that it delivered for Chiefs the league and cup double for a record sixth time. Parker struck in the fourth minute of extra time with a left-footed strike from outside the area – his 13th goal of the season. This was a hard-fought fixture that proved the last in charge for SuperSport coach Hunt before he jumped ship to BidVest Wits. Both sides had opportunities.

2024: SuperSport United 0 Kaizer Chiefs 4

Last Saturday’s victory in the Telkom Knockout for Chiefs over hosts SuperSport in Polokwane was the largest win for AmaKhosi over their rivals. It was a third win in four games for Chiefs since the start of the season and under their new coach Nasreddine Nabi. Gaston Sirino, recently signed from Sundowns, was the star of the victory as his career looked to have a new bounce. He broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with Yusuf Maart powering home a header from Sirino’s corner kick in the 53rd minute to put the visitors in firm control. Gavin Hunt’s side tried to fight their way back but Chiefs caught them on the counter attack and made it 3-0 through Ranga Chivaviro. Gape Moralo received a second yellow card and was sent off, allowing Ashley Du Preez to spring the offside trap and finished coolly with his left foot to complete the scoring.
