Stellenbosch put their first points on the board in the new Betway Premiership season after they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Cape Town City at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday, September 25.

Andre de Jong broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime and Fawaaz Basadien doubled the Maroons' lead with an audacious strike from deep inside his own half on 54 minutes before Sanele Barns sealed the win seven minutes later.

It was a fourth successive derby success for Steve Barker's side as they climbed up to 10th place, two points ahead of the Citizens, who are unmoved in 12th position.

Stellies were looking to get their league campaign up and running after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Golden Arrows a week ago, while City hoped to build on their 1-1 draw with Royal AM on the opening weekend.

The hosts threatened as early as the third minute when Devin Titus saw his shot deflected just wide of the goal and the action quickly switched to the other end as Jaedin Rhodes tested Sage Stephens at the back post from Fortune Makaringe's cross on five minutes.

Stephens had to be at his best five minutes later to deny Darwin Gonzalez after Haashim Domingo picked him out inside the box and Darren Keet made a more routine save from Jayden Adams on 23 minutes.

There was little Keet could do to prevent the opening goal in first-half stoppage time though, as De Jong was allowed time and space to line up a shot from long range that flew into the back of the net.

Keet should perhaps have done better for the Maroons' second goal nine minutes after the restart when Basadien picked up a loose ball from a City corner and lobbed the goalkeeper from well inside his own half to score what will surely be a contender for goal of the season.

The Citizens' night went from bad to worse just past the hour mark as former Richards Bay winger Barns opened his Stellenbosch account to make it 3-0.

Ashley Cupido was presented with an opportunity to get off the mark for his new club in the 86th minute after Langelihle Phili went down under a challenge inside the 18-yard area, but Keet saved his penalty.
