WORLD CUP MOMENTS WITH MARK GLEESON

The Underdogs - Senegal 2002
Senegal were certainly not on many pundits’ list of potential World Cup second round competitors, especially after being drawn in a formidable field in Group A with the holders France, Denmark and Uruguay. But the Teranga Lions did not play to the “conventional script”. Relive the moment with legendry commentator Mark Gleeson.

Pride - Nigeria 1994
Africa’s most populous nation Nigeria finally made a belated World Cup debut in the United States in 1994 and immediately threatened to gate crash the party before a sucker punch saw them eliminated on the brink of glory.

INSPIRATION: Cameroon trailblazers of 1990
African football had titillated with a few moments at past World Cups but it was not until Cameroon captivated the world with their run to the quarterfinal in 1990 that the continent really made its breakthrough. The Indomitable Lions not only upset holders Argentina in the tournament’s opening game in Milan but went onto reach the last eight, going further than any other African country had done before.

Unity - South Africa 2010
The conclusion of the 2010 World Cup was always going to be a bitter-sweet moment for South Africans, as pride in their successful hosting of the tournament combined with a feeling of sorrow as world football’s biggest party finally left town. But more than a decade on, there is a successful sense of accomplishment, looking back on a tournament that broke new barriers.

Controversy – Ghana 2010
Disappointingly host nation South Africa did not make it past the first round and hopes of a major African impact came crashing down as Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria all failed to win a match while the Ivory Coast missed out by a point in a difficult group, behind Brazil and Portugal. It left Ghana to not only fly the continent’s flag but carry the hopes of all the home fans too as they were the only one of the six to make it past the first round.

THE GROUPS

All matches will be available from Compact to Premium with select fixtures on lower packages. On GOtv, all matches will be available on the Supa Package. Showmax Pro, MultiChoice’s streaming platform, will also stream all 64 matches. All matches will also be available on the DStv app.

MULTI-LANGUAGE OPTIONS

The Catch Up service will also host a wealth of World Cup content to help ensure viewers need not miss a thing.

With multi-language options and an array of support programming, the 22nd World Cup will be SuperSport’s most ambitious yet and will include a 24-hour channel for the duration of the event.

A strong panel of experts and analysts is also being lined up to add to the depth of coverage.

Allied to this, SuperSport’s digital offering will be highlighted by a Fifa World Cup section launched on its newly designed website in November.

With dedicated writers for Africa’s participants - Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal – the digital content will also have enhanced scores and data coverage, including player and team data, heat maps, formations, in-depth statistics, short format clips and highlight videos, plus extensive news, video and statistical coverage across website, app, and decoders.

OFFICIAL MATCH BALL

The Official Match Ball of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is known as Al Rihla, it is the 14th successive ball adidas has created for the FIFA World Cup and translates into “the journey” in Arabic after taking its inspiration from the architecture, iconic boats, and national flag of Qatar.
