Kaizer Chiefs coach Vela Khumalo remains optimistic about the DStv Diski Challenge title race despite being six points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs are currently third on the log with 47 points. They are six points behind leaders Sundowns and four points adrift of second-placed Stellenbosch FC.

Interestingly, Amakhosi still must play both Sundowns and Stellenbosch on the weekend of 21 and 28 April respectively.

Khumalo acknowledges that if they win all their remaining matches, they will be in a good position to clinch the reserve league title for the first time in the club's history.

“I think in the previous interview I indicated that anything can still happen. Six games, anything can still happen. Let’s give it the six games and see what happens but we are optimistic,” said Khumalo.

Chiefs are currently on an eight-match undefeated run. And Khumalo would now hope his side avoid complacency.

Most teams such as Pirates and Sundowns have set their intentions clear when they are at the top, but complacency crept in, and that has derailed their progress.

Despite being the highest-scoring team in the Diski Challenge (with 54 goals scored from 24 matches) Khumalo feels his charges can still improve in that department.

He explained: “To be honest with you, we are better at the back because we are not conceding a lot of goals. What we are lacking now is upfront, we need to be more clinical in the final third. We create chances but do not convert them. But with time we will get it right.”

Amakhosi’s next assignment is on Sunday against Cape Town Spurs at Dobsonville Stadium.

Kick-off is at 10:00.
