SuperSport goes hi-tech for Soweto derby

SuperSport has assembled a host of experts and analysts to provide the lowdown for this weekend’s historic match, the 100th fixture between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, at FNB Stadium.

Sunday’s game will be broadcast live on the SuperSport PSL channel from 3pm (build-up from 2pm).

The broadcast of the DStv Premiership fixture will be supplemented by cutting-edge graphics, augmented reality and virtual reality on-field statistics, all in keeping with the nature of the occasion.

Seasoned presenter Carol Tshabalala will host the build-up with top guests Amanda Dlamini, the former Banyana Banyana captain, Jimmy Tau, who represented both Soweto clubs, and Teko Modise, the ex-Pirates midfielder who featured in six derbies.

The multi-language offering will be anchored by Mark Gleeson and Stanton Fredericks (English), Reginald Ndlovu (isiZulu) and Baba Mthethwa (Sotho).

Ensuring that every possible angle is covered, SuperSport will have an array of cameras, including four super-slow motion, two ultra-slow motion and a goalline camera.

Elevating the coverage even further, graphics will encompass a range of information, from player heat maps and average speeds to player statistics and top speed readings.

Augmented reality will take care of team tactics and formations, while there will also be virtual crowds in place, in keeping with the times.

So too virtual fan interaction, ensuring that team supporters can stay engaged during one of the year’s biggest matches.

On-field VR will focus on action and attack with team and player heat maps literally identifying where the game is hottest on what is sure to be a memorable afternoon.

This season, Pirates have beaten Chiefs three times and go into this match riding high with two games in hand.
