Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids admitted his side did not have the quality to break down a stubborn Maritzburg United defence in their 0-0 DStv Premiership draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday.

Neither side created much in the game, but the best chances fell to The Buccaneers, who could not take them.

It means a fourth draw in seven matches this campaign as Pirates fall a full nine points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in what already looks a gap too large to rein in.

"Quite disappointing in the first half not to take advantage of the opportunities we created," Davids said. "Of course, on the other hand you have to give credit to the opponent for their defensive display.

"They never had a shot on target or disturbed our goalkeeper, but then it falls on us to be able to unlock the defensive line. Of course, with them playing four centre-backs, they changed in the second half with five at the back, you need to be creative and unlock the defensive block you are presented with.

"We tried to go through the centre, which was not possible. We tried to go with extreme width. Not really possible. And very unfortunate not to get the goal to unlock the game."

Pirates are next in action in the home leg of their CAF Confederation Cup tie with Congolese side Diables Noir on Sunday. The first leg finished 0-0. Their next DStv Premiership match is home to Royal AM next Thursday.
