Chiefs stutter again, Pirates eviscerate Arrows
The different fortunes of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates headlined the weekend’s DStv Premiership action, while form teams Stellenbosch FC and Sekhukhune United cancelled each other out.
Chiefs saw their miserable recent run extended with a 2-0 defeat away to Chippa United in awful conditions at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Saturday, as goals from Bienvenu Eva Nga and Sinoxolo Kwayiba secured a famous win for the Chilli Boys.

And to further rub salt into the Amakhosi’s wounds, on the same day arch rivals Pirates put in a dazzling attacking display to eviscerate Golden Arrows 7-1 at the Orlando Stadium.
The Buccaneers had stuttered to just one point in their two previous league clashes, and took out their frustration on a helpless Abafana Bes’thende, as Tshegofatso Mabasa netted a hat-trick and Relebohile Mofokeng, Kabelo Dlamini, Sandile Mthethwa and Karim Kimvuidi also found the back of the net.
Saturday also saw Richards Bay secure a 1-0 win over Moroka Swallows (thanks to Khuda Muyaba’s late strike) to give them a glimmer of hope in terms of avoiding the relegation playoffs; form teams Stellenbosch FC and Sekhukhune United played out a goalless stalemate at the Danie Craven Stadium; and TS Galaxy recorded a third successive league win by edging SuperSport United 1-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, with Mpho Mvelase netting the only goal of the game.
On Sunday, AmaZulu claimed a 1-0 away win over 10-man Cape Town City, with the visitors capitalising on an early red card for Keanu Cupido thanks to Sede Junior Dion’s second-half strike, while Royal AM claimed a thrilling 3-2 home win over Polokwane City at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
All the action occurred in the second half, with Thwihli Thwahla opening the scoring, then going 2-1 down, before finally securing all three points in injury time with a winner from unlikely hero Zukile Mkhize.
The DStv Premiership will continue this coming midweek with a catch-up match pitting Cape Town Spurs against Mamelodi Sundowns.
