Moroka Swallows have confirmed they have parted ways with coach Steve Komphela following a tumultuous 2023/24 campaign to date and amid much upheaval off the pitch.

Komphela was not on the bench for Saturday’s 1-0 DStv Premiership loss to Polokwane City as a new-look Swallows side slipped to defeat following the axing of a large chunk of their playing personnel in January.

That was due to the players, citing unpaid salaries, refusing to take part in fixtures towards the end of 2023 which were awarded by 3-0 scorelines to Mamelodi Sundowns and Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Swallows also had a R1-million fine imposed on them, but R600 000 was suspended for two years.

“Moroka Swallows FC and Coach Steve have agreed to a mutual separation,” the club said in a statement. “This comes after several discussions between both parties, where it was ultimately agreed that it would be in the best interest of both the Club and Coach Steve to (go our) separate at this stage.

“There remains a mutual respect between both parties and the decision to separate is one both parties have welcomed. The Club wishes Coach Steve all the best in his future endeavours, and we are grateful for the contributions he has made to the Club.

“Coach Steve has expressed gratitude to the Club and has wished us well.”

It is thought assistant coaches Musa Nyatama and Ditheko Mototo will lead the club for the foreseeable future, with the club making no mention of a new appointment.
