URC: Did You See That

The average Vodacom United Rugby Championship round contains eight matches - eight action-packed matches, where anything spectacular can happen at any given time.

Now, a hardcore rugby fan would spend those 16 hours a weekend unblinkingly staring at his TV, hellbent on not missing a thing. Good for them.

The rest of us don't do that. We have the ruggas on in the background, but we only really focus on one or two matches.

Here's the good news: it's perfectly fine not to be a 16-hour-a-weekend kind of guy. We have you covered.

Welcome to our first edition of URC: Did You See That? In this weekly feature, the supersport.com rugby department aims to find those little diamonds in the rough you may have missed while turning a chop.

Our Did You See That list specifically aims not to be a weekend highlights package, in fact, if we could we wouldn't show you one good try. Instead we're going to pick out five interesting moments from the weekend past and then have as much fun with them as possible.

So please make yourself comfortable, we have some things to discuss...

  1. MA SE PUSH!

OK, so what you're about to see is a flanker shoving a scrumhalf off the ball midway through the act of completing a clearance kick. The flanker then goes on to dot down the spilled ball for a very lucky try.

We don't know enough about rugby to know whether this was legal, but we know enough about rugby to know that nothing that is done to a scrumhalf is illegal. The jury is out.

    2. BULLS HIT

The following compilation may not be to everyone's taste. If you're a flyhalf, feel free to skip straight through to point three.

Now that we only have nice guys left, how impressive was the Bulls scrum on Saturday? We don't know how long it will take the Ulster pack to recover from this.

Here is your 90 seconds of pure bliss:

    3. FLYING FISH (NO, NOT THE DRINK)

We'll be the first to admit that we don't know much about scoring celebrations. All we know is how to describe what it looked like.

It looked like an angry Great White breaching the surface after an oil tanker oopsied a full load of Red Bull into False Bay.

    4. HAT-TRICK HERO

A hearty congrats to Rabz Maxwane for scoring the first hat-trick in this '24/25 edition of the URC. The Lions wings are going to do a lot of running this year by the looks of things.

We first thought about showing you a clip of his three tries, but then we realised that it would take away the focus from the most delicious part of it all. Behold the old-school in-out swerve. That is how all wings scored their tries before the game went pro and they learned how to tackle.

    5. VICIOUS MAULING

If there is one thing that the Wallabies learned from playing against the Springboks this year, it is that there is no such thing as uncontested lineout mauls. The match officials really don't care how many props you have on the field when Eben pulls one out of the air and that Bok pack binds around him.

The Springboks deserved all the credit they got for some pretty innovative maul presentations during their home season. They also deserve credit for spreading the love.

The Bulls scored from every U9B prop's favourite lineout move - the short one to the very front. The Stormers scored after running a couple of NFL wide receiver-like lines behind a screen of players. Either way, it was clever and it worked.

May there be a lot more from where this came...

That is it for this week. Keep the fun going by interacting with us on our various social media channels. We'd love to know what we missed.
