Visa issues with a move to a new home in England has forced former Junior Springbok player of the year Corne Beets to reconsider and prompted him to sign a new two-year deal with the Vodacom Bulls.

Beets, who was the standout player in the SA under-20 side in 2023, is seen as one of the brightest prospects from that Junior Boks group and there was understandably disappointment when he decided to sign for English club Leicester Tigers from the end of this season.

Leicester announced the move back in March, but confirmed late on Thursday that Beets would not be joining them.

The decision is another coup for the Bulls, who already have Bok loose forwards in Elrigh Louw, Marco van Staden and Cameron Hanekom, while former Boks like Marcell Coetzee and Nizaam Carr are also at the club.

Leicester said visa issues had scuppered the deal, and wished Beets well at the Bulls.

“The club is disappointed to confirm that Corné Beets will not be joining Leicester Tigers this season.

“Beets, who was announced in March of this year as a signing for the 24/25 season, will remain in South Africa after visa requirements to allow him to play in the Premiership, were not met.

“Despite sustained efforts from the club, the player, and his management, exploring all avenues, securing a visa for Beets is not going to be possible this year, therefore both parties have agreed to terminate the agreement.

“Speaking about the outcome, General Manager Richard Wilks said: "Unfortunately, he falls just short of the visa requirements which would have allowed him to join us at Leicester Tigers this season, both parties are extremely disappointed and will continue to be in communication moving forward."

"For now, I want to thank Corné, his management and commend the efforts of all at Leicester Tigers in trying to find a positive outcome and, on behalf of the club, wish him all the best for the future."

Beets said in a press release from the Bulls that “home is where the heart is” in announcing his stay.

“The Vodacom Bulls are the most successful South African franchise, who wouldn’t want to be part of a club with such a rich history?” says Beets.

“What I enjoy most is the culture we’ve built here. It’s about more than just winning; it’s about fostering an environment where everyone pushes each other to be their best. We’re all working toward the same goal, not just personal success but achieving something remarkable as a team.

“Over the next few years, my goal is to do whatever it takes to help the team win more trophies and bring fresh and new memories for this incredible club and its support base.

“I’m determined to be a key part of the team’s journey - on the field and beyond - helping to build a legacy that the fans can be proud of. This side has a rich tradition of success, and I’m fully committed to contributing to that, not just for us as players, but for the loyal supporters who have stood by us through every high and low.

Beets concludes by saying: “Together, I believe we have the potential to achieve something truly special, and I’m excited to play my part in writing the next chapter of this storied franchise.”
