Davids and Pretorius win gold in rain drenched day
Only two finals could be held on Friday, as a severe thunderstorm forced most of the afternoon session to be cancelled on Day 2 of the ASA Senior Track and Field Championships in Potchefstroom.
There was a thrilling battle in the men's triple jump final though, with the top three athletes finishing within just seven centimetres of each other. Layton David of Boland Athletics (BOLA) won gold with a 16.92m wind-assisted leap, narrowly holding off a challenge from Welre Olivier who landed at 16.91m to earn silver for host province Athletics Central North West (ACNW). Olivier's younger brother, 17-year-old Ethan, took the bronze medal in the colours of Athletics Vaal Triangle (AVT) with a jump of 16.85m.
In the decathlon, Fredriech Pretorius secured victory after racking up 7 483 points over two gruelling days of competition, leading an Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) sweep of the podium. His teammates, Ruan Bronkhorst (6 201) and Katleho Matsekane (5 712), earned the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
With the ASA Senior Championships hosting age group events in the decathlon, Dimar van der Linde (AGN) won the national U20 title with 5 660 points and Adriaano Hartogh (BOLA) won gold in the U18 category with 4 871 points. All events that could not be held on Friday will be added to the programme on Saturday's third and final day of competition at NWU McArthur Stadium.
