Italy's Vanessa Ferrari, the Olympic silver medallist on floor in Tokyo, has pulled out of the Paris Games on Thursday with a calf injury.

"My journey to Paris ends here. Yesterday (Wednesday) during a test for the Italian Championships next week, my calf gave way during the take off for a jump," she wrote on her Instagram account.

"As there is only a month left before the Games, I will not have time to recover from this muscle injury."

Ferrari, 33, was due to take part in her fifth Olympic Games in Paris.

In Tokyo, she finished second on floor behind American Jade Carey, giving Italy its first Olympic medal in gymnastics since 1928.

Her list of achievements includes the world all-around title in 2006 and the European all-around title in 2007.
