All eight teams to reach this year’s Nedbank Cup quarterfinals have been here before, and all but one have a positive win ratio when it comes to ties at this stage of the competition.

Here is a look back at their record since 2008 ahead of the opening fixture of the round between University of Pretoria and Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday night.

Usuthu have a 75 per cent win rate when they get to the quarterfinals though they have not been here since 2012. Their only defeat was in 2011 when they went down 2-3 to Mpumalanga Black Aces in a thriller. They have wins over Black Leopards (3-2, 2008), second-tier University of Pretoria (2-1, 2010) and Santos (1-0, 2012).

CHIPPA UNITED

Chippa also have a positive win rate and have advanced in 75 per cent of their quarterfinal ties, though they needed penalties to get past BidVest Wits in 2019 following a 4-4 draw, one of the all-time great Nedbank Cup ties. They beat Jomo Cosmos 1-0 in 2017, second-tier Richards Bay 2-1 in 2021, but fell at this stage last season when they went down 1-2 to Sekhukhune United.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Sundowns have never been involved in a draw at the quarterfinal stage of the Nedbank Cup and have a 67 per cent success rate at this stage of the competition. They did go out in the last-8 in 2023 though as they lost 2-1 to Stellenbosch FC, to go with defeats to Platinum Stars (1-2, 2013) and Orlando Pirates (1-2, 2014 & 0-2, 2016). But it has mostly been a tale of victories, including a thumping 3-1 success over Pirates in 2010 and then an even better 4-1 beating of The Buccaneers in 2021.

ORLANDO PIRATES

Both Pirates’ quarterfinal losses have come at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns (1-3, 2010 & 1-4, 2021) with no other side able to knock them out at this stage. They have beaten Free State Stars (1-0, 2011), Sundowns (2-1, 2014 & 2-0, 2016), Bloemfontein Celtic (2-1, 2017), and survived a penalty shoot-out scare against third-tier Dondol Stars when they eventually triumphed on their way to lifting the trophy in 2023.

STELLENBOSCH FC

Stellenbosch FC’s only previous quarterfinal resulted in a famous 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns as they came from behind to snatch the tie thanks to a brace of goals from Iqraam Rayners last season. They are back again for a second year running and will be hoping to repeat their semifinal showing in 2023.

SUPERSPORT UNITED

P7 W4 D1 L2 GF9 GA8

SuperSport have advanced in 71 per cent of their quarterfinal games, only failing on two occasions. They lost 0-2 to Kaizer Chiefs in 2014 and, more disapprovingly, 2-3 to TTM in 2022, the first time they had ever lost to lower league opposition. They played to a 1-1 draw with Chiefs in 2017 but advanced on penalties, and have wins over Jomo Cosmos (1-0, 2012), Maritzburg United (2-1, 2013), Lamontville Golden Arrows (1-0, 2015) and Mpumalanga Black Aces (2-1, 2016).

TS GALAXY

P1 W1 D0 L0 GF2 GA1

Galaxy’s only previous visit to the quarterfinal was the year they famously lifted the trophy as a second-tier side, still the only club ever to achieve that feat. They met fellow Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit Cape Umoya United and won 2-1 as they went on to beat Kaizer Chiefs in the decider in Durban.

UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA

P3 W1 D0 L2 GF4 GA5

AmaTuks won their first Nedbank Cup quarterfinal when, as a second-tier side, they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in 2009, going all the way to the final under coach Steve Barker, only to lose to Moroka Swallows. They have been back to the last-8 twice since then, but not advanced. They lost 1-2 to AmaZulu in 2010 and 2-3 to Royal AM in 2022.
