Former United captain Kean into PL Hall of Fame

Roy Keane is the latest player to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Irishman was a dominant figure for Manchester United, helping to take them to seven Premier League titles during his 12 seasons at the club.

Keane joins inaugural inductees Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry, plus former team-mate Eric Cantona in receiving the highest individual honour given by the Premier League.

"I feel very lucky to be inducted but I’ve only been inducted because of the players I’ve played with," Keane said.

He is one of the six players from a 23-man shortlist to have received the most combined votes from the public and the Premier League panel. A further four will be announced this week.

"Signing for Manchester United and walking into a brilliant dressing room [was the highlight of my career]," Keane said of his move from Nottingham Forest for a British-record fee in the summer of 1993.

'CLOUGH WAS BIGGEST INFLUENCE'

But he reserved special praise for his manager at Forest, Brian Clough, who brought him from Cobh Ramblers in County Cork, Ireland, to the Premier League.

"Brian Clough [was my biggest influence] for signing and giving me my debut and his advice before my debut was telling me: control the ball, pass it to my team-mate and run," he said. "That was the foundation of my career."

Eligibility for Hall of Fame

To be eligible for the Premier League Hall of Fame this year, players had to have been retired as of 1 August 2020, and only a player’s Premier League career was considered in his candidacy.

Each inductee will receive a personalised medallion, engraved with the year of their induction.
