Italian sides have lost each of their last four away UEFA Champions League visits to Bayern Munich, though this is the first time an Italian side has faced Bayern away from home since Juventus lost 4-2 in March 2016 in the last 16.
Since Hansi Flick took charge of the club, Bayern Munich have won their six home games in the UEFA Champions League by an aggregate score of 18-3. However, only one of the previous six have come in the knockout stages of the competition – beating Chelsea 4-1 in the second leg of last season’s Round of 16.
Lazio have only won one of their last 15 away games in the UEFA Champions League (D5 L9) and are winless in the last eight in this run (D4 L4). Their last away win in the competition was back in September 2003, winning 2-0 away at Besiktas in the group stage.
No side in the history of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League has ever progressed from a knockout tie after losing the first leg by three or more goals at home – prior to this season, that has occurred on 88 occasions with all 88 sides being eliminated.
Each of Lazio’s last 13 matches in the UEFA Champions League has seen both sides score – the longest run in the history of the European Cup/Champions League.
In the first leg, Jamal Musiala became Bayern Munich’s youngest ever goal scorer (17y 363d) in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, breaking Samuel Kuffour’s record from 1994 (18y 60d). The only teenager to score in consecutive appearances in the competition for the club is Kingsley Coman in March 2016, when he was 19.
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been directly involved in 33 goals in 31 home games for the club in the UEFA Champions League (28 goals and 5 assists). Indeed, the German side have won all 21 of their home games in the competition when Lewandowski has been on the scoresheet.
Lazio – who need to score at least four goals to have any chance of qualifying for the next round – haven’t scored four in an away UEFA Champions League match since October 1999 vs Maribor, a 4-0 win. They haven’t scored four in an away UEFA European knockout match since the 1998-99 Cup Winners’ Cup quarterfinal at Panionios, winning 4-0.
Robert Lewandowski has scored 14 goals and assisted five more in 12 UEFA Champions League appearances under Hansi Flick, with Bayern Munich winning all 12 matches when the Pole has played under Flick. Only under Jürgen Klopp (17 goals, 6 assists in 28 appearances) has Lewandowski been involved in more goals for a manager in the competition.
