DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

Returning men's singles champion Novak Djokovic will enter New York on the heels of an Olympic gold medal that completed his career Golden Slam. The Serb has not competed since his triumph on the Paris clay, but has proven time and again he can play his way into form on a new surface at the Slams.

In last year’s final Djokovic secured the title after beating Daniil Medvedev, 6–3, 7–6 (7–5), 6–3.

Women's champ Coco Gauff competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles at the Olympics but scored just four wins across the three disciplines. Back on the North American courts, she went 1-2 across Toronto and Cincinnati.

The 20-year-old will hope a return to the site of her maiden Grand Slam triumph will spark a return to form.

She beat Aryna Sabalenka, 2–6, 6–3, 6–2 to claim her first Grand Slam.

THE CONTENDERS

Instead of arriving at the US Open wondering about his form, world number 1, Sinner will now take confidence knowing he persevered in Cincinnati without his very best game to claim his third Masters 1000 title.

He survived and then thrived to become the youngest Cincinnati champion since Andy Murray emerged victorious in Ohio as a 21-year-old in 2008

WILD CARDS

Two of the best big-match players in tennis are set to grace the game's biggest stage as wild cards.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu were among the eight women's singles wild cards, joining Americans Amanda Anisimova, McCartney Kessler, Alexa Noel and Iva Jovic, plus France's Chloe Paquet and Australia's Taylah Preston.
