What has been going on in LaLiga this past week? Here are 10 of the top stories, from Barça and Real Madrid’s comeback victories to the latest Spanish national team squad.
The past week was a busy one in the world of Spanish football, with Matchday 28 producing several important results and with four Spanish clubs progressing in European action too. Those headlines and more are outlined below.
FC BARCELONA FIGHT BACK TO CONQUER ATLÉTICO DE MADRID
FC Barcelona remain in first place in LaLiga EA Sports thanks to a brilliant comeback away at Atlético de Madrid on Sunday night. Despite going 2-0 down, Barça scored four goals in the final 20 minutes to defeat Los Colchoneros 4-2 and to earn a very valuable three points.
The result means the Catalans are level with Real Madrid on 60 points, despite having played one game less than their rivals.
MBAPPÉ EARNS REAL MADRID A RARE AWAY WIN AT VILLARREAL CF
Real Madrid produced a comeback win of their own in Matchday 28, responding to an early Villarreal CF goal to win 2-1 at the Estadio de la Cerámica thanks to two Kylian Mbappé strikes. It’s Los Blancos’ first league win there since 2017.
REAL BETIS EARN THEIR FIFTH WIN IN A ROW
For the first time in the Manuel Pellegrini era, Real Betis have won five games in a row in LaLiga EA Sports. By defeating CD Leganés 3-2 on the road, coming from 2-0 down, Real Betis continued their brilliant run of form and they’re now level on 44 points with fifth-placed Villarreal CF.
IMPRESSIVE AWAY WINS FOR ATHLETIC CLUB, RC CELTA AND GETAFE CF
There were several other impressive away wins this past weekend, and several of them were won with late goals. That was the case as RC Celta won 1-0 at Real Valladolid, as Athletic Club also won by a 1-0 scoreline, in their case at Sevilla FC, and as Getafe CF came from behind to overcome CA Osasuna 2-1 in Pamplona. In fact, six of the 10 fixtures in LaLiga EA Sports Matchday 28 were won by the away team.
CD LEGANÉS FALL BACK INTO THE RELEGATION ZONE
CD Leganés’ loss, combined with a 2-2 draw between UD Las Palmas and Deportivo Alavés, means that the capital city club have fallen back into the bottom three, with Deportivo Alavés climbing up to 17th. It’s ever so tight at the bottom, though, since Los Pepineros and Los Babazorros are level on 27 points.
REAL MADRID DEFEAT ATLÉTICO DE MADRID ON PENALTIES IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
There was also European action this past week, with one Champions League Round of 16 tie pitting two Spanish clubs against each other in a derby. Although Atlético de Madrid made it 2-2 on aggregate in their capital city clash with Real Madrid, the defending champions ultimately prevailed on penalties and will play Arsenal in the quarterfinals.
FC BARCELONA COMFORTABLY FINISH THE JOB AGAINST BENFICA
There will be two Spanish clubs in the last eight of the Champions League after FC Barcelona defeated Benfica 3-1 in their Champions League Round of 16 second leg, making it a 4-1 aggregate win. With Raphinha scoring three goals in the tie, he was without a doubt the star or the show.
ATHLETIC CLUB AND REAL BETIS ALSO REMAIN ALIVE IN EUROPE
There are two other Spanish clubs still able to dream of European glory this season, as Athletic Club progressed to the Europa League quarterfinals, defeating Roma 4-3 on aggregate, and Real Betis have made the last eight of the Conference League, thrashing Vitória de Guimarães 6-2 on aggregate.
IÑIGO MARTÍNEZ RENEWS HIS CONTRACT AT FC BARCELONA
FC Barcelona announced a contract renewal this past week, with Iñigo Martínez’s deal extended until the end of the 2025/26 season. The 33-year-old centre-back has become a key pillar of Hansi Flick’s defence, and Barça are excited to keep the veteran defender for at least another year.
LALIGA EA SPORTS PLAYERS FILL UP THE SPAIN SQUAD
Luis de la Fuente announced his latest Spain squad this past week, for the March Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands. 19 out of the 27 players called up are plying their trade for a LaLiga EA Sports club, with eight different Spanish clubs represented, namely: Athletic Club, Atlético de Madrid, CA Osasuna, FC Barcelona, RC Celta, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Villarreal CF.
