Gustavo Alfaro has resigned as the head coach of the Costa Rica national soccer team after nine months in charge, a source within his coaching staff told Reuters on Friday.

The Argentine Alfaro is reportedly being considered as one of the potential successors to Daniel Garnero as head coach of the Paraguay national team, according to Argentine media.

"He is no longer the coach, he has agreed to leave," said a source from Alfaro's team, without explaining the reasons for the decision.

The 61-year-old Alfaro led Costa Rica in the recent Copa America, but they were eliminated in the group stage after finishing third. He earlier led Ecuador to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Costa Rican Football Federation has not officially announced the coach's resignation.
