Following a tense affair at the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium, Sekhukhune United secured maximum points in their final DStv Premiership fixture with a 1-0 win against Chippa Unitedon Saturday afternoon.

Asekho Tiwani’s effort shortly after the hour mark ensured that the Limpopo-based outfit ended the 2023/24 season in fourth position while Chippa slumped down to 12th of the log.

Chippa started the game on a positive note and held most of the ball during the first 15 minutes.

With the likes of Thabang Molaoa and Brooklyn Poggenpoel probing in the middle of the park, Sekhukhune often found it difficult to get the ball out of their own half.

Daniel Cardoso came close to scoring the opening goal of the game in the 20th minute after his left-footed shot from the centre of the 18-yard-area went wide of the goalkeeper’s left.

At the other end of the pitch, Thabo Makhele tested Badra Sangare with a header inside the area after being picked out by Poggenpoel with an accurate cross into the box.

The Chilli Boys continued to threaten the Sekhukhune defence line midway through the first 45 with Makhele proving to be an aerial threat throughout the half.

Struggling to stitch passes together, Babina Noko battled to produce any notable scoring opportunities and ended the half with zero shots on target.

While Chippa got the better of Sekhukhune in the first half, it was Babina Noko who went into the subsequent 45 as the better side.

Chibuike Ohizu and Vusimuzi Mncube came close to opening the scoring soon after the restart but saw their chances go begging.

Sekhukhune were awarded a penalty moments before the hour-mark, as the referee pointed to the spot following a rash challenge in the area by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili.

Stepping up to the spot, Nwabili made up for his error by saving Daniel Cardoso’s right-footed attempt.

However, Sekhukhune took the lead in the 63rd minute as Asekho Tiwani found the back of the net with a finish from the centre of the Chippa United goal.

Babina Noko remained in control of the tie after taking the lead while Chippa battled to progress the ball up field.

Tiwani’s effort after the hour-mark proved to be the winner on the day as Sekhukhune bag maximum points in their final league assignment of the season.
