South Africa international Percy Tau has moved from African champions Al Ahly to Qatar, his former coach confirmed on Friday.

Speculation over a transfer for the 30-year-old Bafana striker has whirled for days but Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller confirmed Tau was no longer part of the club but had gone to Qatar when he spoke to the media on Friday ahead of his team’s African Champions League tie against Stade Abidjan in the Ivory Coast this weekend.

His new club are based in Doha and are eight-time Qatar champions, although last won the league title 21 years ago.

They sit second from bottom in the 12-team league with 10 points from 11 matches.

Tau could make his debut as early as Sunday when they take on log leaders Al Duhail, who sit 15 points above them in the standings.

Tau came on as a late substitute last Sunday as Al Ahly lost in Algeria to Chabab Belouizdad in their last Champions League tie.

He had been at the club for three-and-half seasons, in which he won two Champions League titles to add to the medal he won in the colours of Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016.

Tau also competed in three Club World Cups with Al Ahly, who he joined from English club Brighton &Hove Albion.

He had been signed by Brighton in 2018 but loaned out to three clubs in Belgium before he got the chance to compete in the Premier League.
