Despite tons of promise, qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix ended badly for the Spanish pair of Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz.

Alonso was odds on to claim as pot on the second row of the grid, at the very least, before his much improved Apline slammed into the barriers in Q3.

It turns out that the crash was no fault of the two-time world champions as an apparent hydraulics failure prevented him from bringing the car home for his best qualifying for a long time.

Carlos Sainz’s day went from bad to worse because of his compatriot’s crash.

The Ferrari driver was on course to challenge Charles Leclerc for pole position with in his first Q3 run but the red flag from Alonso’s crash meant his time was deleted.

Once the track was cleared for running again, he encountered his first technical issue of the modern era which delayed the start of his final push for a first pole position.

Sainz then compounded his problems with a poor show out on track and will start the race from ninth place, next to Alonso who start from 10th.
