Cape Town Spurs made sure to continue their improvement in form when they defeated Venda Football Club 3-1 in the Nedbank Cup at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The result sees the Urban Warriors book themselves a ticket into the Round of 16 of the tournament, highlighting their resilience after a worrying start to the season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The match started with the teams feeling each other out, but there was a build-up in pressure from the Spurs attack who kept their shape and the opposition in their own half.

The Urban Warriors began to dominate early in the match earned the first corner of the match, which would then be the catalyst for a successful outing for the away team.

From the set piece, the Cape Town outfit grabbed the lead through Keenan Bezuidenhout in the 14th minute who blasted the goal past the goalkeeper after receiving a pass from Jarrod Moroole.

Asanele Velebayi was busy in the beginning of the match producing dangerous crosses which threatened the Venda defence, as the Warriors continued to add pressure after getting ahead.

As the first half neared its end, Venda began to look more threatening and even won a free kick in a dangerous area just outside the penalty box. The kick was taken but nothing came of it as it landed straight into Spurs goalie Marlon Heugh’s hands.

Spurs doubled their lead through Moroole, who was heavily involved in the attack as he headed home just before the stroke of halftime, ensuring that the away team went into the break two goals ahead.

The second stanza saw Venda look more dangerous in the attack, but Spurs did well to contain them and protect their lead.

Therlo Moosa continued his recent scoring run when he netted the third for the Urban Warriors in the 18-yard area in the 65th minute after taking advantage of a Velebayi cross from the left flank.

As the visitors continued to dominate, Venda found their feet eventually and pulled one back after being awarded a penalty which was converted by substitute Rotondwa Mutsivhuli in the 75th minute.

The Urban Warriors then held on and made sure not to concede more goals despite Venda’s attacking efforts and ultimately won the match, extending their unbeaten to three matches streak in all competitions.
