All systems go as runners line-up for City to City Marathon

With an overall payout purse of R1.2 million and a mouthwatering dangling carrot of R200 000 for each winner in the male and female races, a thrilling contest beckons on Sunday.

The 50km highly anticipated 2024 City to City ultra-Marathon which boasts a full backing of Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and his government, is not holding back on the take-home for athletes with runners-up assured of walking away with a handsome R100 000 each to the runners-up, and a wonderfull R50 000 to the third-place finishers.

Returning after an eight-year hiatus, the race starts 6am from Centurion Gautrain Station at 6am and finishes at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

The ultra will be supported by a 10km and a 5km which will start and finsh at The Wanderers Sports Club at 7am.

The City to City Marathon is hosted in partnership with the Gauteng Province government, City of Tshwane, City of Johannesburg, Athletics South Africa, Athletics Gauteng North, Central Gauteng Athletics and Gautrain.

The race also holds significant importance as it is classified as a Comrades Marathon qualifier, offering participants a valuable opportunity to prepare for the renowned Comrades Marathon on 9 June 2024.

UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

The 50km point-to-point route promises an unforgettable experience adding to an unparalleled level of competitiveness to the race.

There is limited race entries remaining for all distances, including 300 for the 50km event, and 200 each for the 10km and 5km races, on a first-come, first-served basis.

These entries will be facilitated manually at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane on Thursday, and at the Wanderers Sports Club on Friday, and Saturday, respectively.

Some roads and streets will be temporarily closed along the route to ensure a smooth flow of the race. Motorists are requested to cooperate and be tolerant of the athletes and race as organisers strive to deliver an unforgettable and enjoyable experience for all.
