The 2022 edition of the MTN8 got off to an entertaining start on Saturday, with AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates securing semifinal berths thanks to away victories over Cape Town City and Royal AM respectively.

Pirates claimed the headline result by defeating ambitious Royal 2-1 at Chatsworth Stadium in the evening game, with the Buccaneers triumphing thanks to goals from Vincent Pule and Thabiso Monyane.

However, Thwihli Thwahla bossed possession and made the final third of the clash a tense affair thanks to Shaune Mogaila’s strike.

The afternoon match at Cape Town Stadium saw AmaZulu become the first team to advance into the final four, as they defeated Cape Town City 2-1.

Usuthu claimed an early lead through Augustine Kwem, but were pegged back by the Citizens’ Khanyiso Mayo in first-half injury time.

The teams then stayed level through the remainder of regulation time and 23 minutes of an extra half hour, before former City striker Lehlohonolo Majoro struck home the decisive goal to see the Durban side claim a hard-fought victory.

The MTN8 quarterfinals will wrap up on Sunday, 28 August with Stellenbosch FC v Kaizer Chiefs at Danie Craven Stadium and the Tshwane derby between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United at Tuks Stadium.
