British modern pentathlete Myles Pillage is out of Paris Olympics due to a calf injury, the British Olympic Association (BOA) said on Saturday, and Charlie Brown has been picked to replace him in the team.

Pillage, who was part of the gold medal-winning team in last year's European Games, sustained the injury at the World Championships in China last month, and injured himself again after he returned to training, the BOA said in a statement.

"For Myles to have his dream of competing at the Olympic Games taken away from him due to injury is devastating... we all wish him well in his recovery," team leader Georgina Harland said.

"This has given Charlie an incredible opportunity which I know he will grasp."

Brown said he was grateful for the opportunity.

"To compete at an Olympic Games this early on in my career, is something I am very proud of," the 21-year-old said.

The Paris Olympics formally begin on 26 July.
