What has been going on in LALIGA this past week? Here are 10 of the top stories, from FC Barcelona winning the Spanish Super Cup to Atlético de Madrid becoming winter champions.

It was a busy week in the world of Spanish football, with the final games of Matchday 19 of LALIGA EA SPORTS taking place and with the Spanish Super Cup being held in Saudi Arabia. The main headlines from those games are outlined in detail here.

FC Barcelona win the Spanish Super Cup

Hansi Flick has won his first trophy as coach of FC Barcelona, as the Catalan club claimed the 2024/25 Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. After overcoming Athletic Club in the semifinals, Barça thrashed rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in the final to claim the first piece of silverware of the Spanish football season.

Atlético de Madrid are the winter champions

Back in Spain, the final fixtures of Matchday 19 took place this past weekend and Atlético de Madrid defeated CA Osasuna 1-0 courtesy of a Julián Alvarez goal. That result means that Atleti have won 14 in a row in all competitions, a club record, and that they are winter champions, the virtual title for the club sitting in first place at the halfway stage of the league season.

Diego Cocca secures his first win as Real Valladolid coach

Real Valladolid defeated Real Betis 1-0 in Matchday 19, thanks to a goal by Kike Pérez. It’s new coach Diego Cocca’s first victory since arriving at the club, and it moves Los Blanquivioletas off the foot of the LALIGA EA SPORTS table.

Getafe CF achieve their first away win of the season

There was another significant result towards the bottom of the table, as Getafe CF defeated UD Las Palmas 2-1 in the Canary Islands. That is the first away win of the season for Los Azulones, who are now three points clear of the relegation zone.

Rayo Vallecano climb into the top half of the table

On Friday night, Rayo Vallecano defeated RC Celta 2-1 in front of their home fans in Vallecas, a result which moves them into the top half of the table. They’re on a great run of form, and haven’t lost any of their past five in the league.

Girona FC win in stoppage time

Perhaps the most dramatic victory of Matchday 19 was Girona FC’s 1-0 win away at Deportivo Alavés, as the Catalan outfit scored the only goal of the game in the 91st minute when Jhon Solís pounced inside the penalty area.

The spoils are shared in the Asturian Derby

Looking at LALIGA HYPERMOTION, the second tier of Spanish football, the big game of the past weekend was the Asturian Derby between Real Oviedo and Real Sporting. It was a thrilling battle, as it always is, and finished in a 1-1 draw, with Hassan scoring for the home side and César Gelabert for the visitors.

Sevilla FC strengthen the squad by signing Rubén Vargas

Sevilla FC are looking to improve in the second half of the season, and they’ve signed 26-year-old winger Rubén Vargas with that aim. The Switzerland international has been at FC Augsburg since 2019, and arrives on a contract that’ll run until 2029.

Valencia CF resume work on the Nou Mestalla

This past week, Valencia CF resumed work on the Nou Mestalla stadium. The club’s aim is to move in 2027, to this venue that’ll have a seating capacity of 70 044.
