BETWAY PREM WRAP: Sundowns reclaim first, Bucs suffer first league defeat
Orlando Pirates were beaten for the first time this season in the Betway Premiership by a resilient Stellenbosch side who took the lead through Devin Titus in the first half.
The match ultimately ended 1-0, with the Buccaneers losing at home in the Orlando Stadium in Soweto, where they enjoyed a wonderful reception from fans.
Mamelodi Sundowns reclaimed first position in the log following their 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday evening.
“I do believe in this match that we could have scored more than five [goals]. But unfortunately, it was just not to be. We played against a good team but I think they resorted to a strategy that they hardly used,” said coach Manqoba Mngqithi after the game.
“They are not a team that normally sits back like that. But I think maybe they felt after their loss against TS Galaxy maybe they don’t want to lose again and that gave us a little bit more momentum.”
In Saturday’s other fixtures, AmaZulu continued their return to form with a 3-1 win over Richards Bay FC in the KZN derby at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
Kaizer Chiefs gave away a two-goal lead to ultimately draw 2-2 with Royal AM at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and Chippa United collected all three points against Carling Knockout champions Magesi in a 2-0 win.
Elsewhere, Golden Arrows defeated Cape Town City 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Mpumalanga Stadium and Polokwane City fought back to collect a 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy.
