Diogo Peral will take over as coach of Cape Town City for the rest of the season with veteran Roger de Sa enlisted to help him, the club said after Monday’s departure of Muhsin Ertugral.

Peral has been the long-standing assistant to first Jan Olde Reikerink and then Eric Tinkler and was previously in charge for two matches in 2021 when Dutch coach Olde Reikerink was fired and before Tinkler took over.

In 2023 he obtained his Uefa A license, traveling to Scotland over a 12-month period regularly to complete the course.

With seven matches of the season left, City owner John Comitis has decided to put Peral in charge but bring in De Sa as an assistant alongside Lebogang Manyama.

It is a return to the domestic game for De Sa, who last worked with Carlos Queiroz as an assistant for Egypt at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals, where they lost the final on penalties; Iran at the 2022 World Cup and then lastly Qatar.

The 60-year-old De Sa’s last involvement in the Premier Soccer League was as coach of Platinum Stars in the 2017-18 season.

City and Ertugral agreed to go their separate ways on Monday after the weekend’s home loss to Marumo Gallants extended the club’s winless streak to 10 matches.

It left City slumped in 13th place in the Betway Premiership standings, only two points above the relegation zone.

Peral’s first game in charge will be away against fellow strugglers SuperSport United in Polokwane on Sunday March 30.
