As we head into the festive season is it a good point to take stock of how the various Betway Premiership teams are performing compared to the same stage last season.

The 16 clubs have played varying number of matches in 2024-25, some as low as eight and others 11, but we can still benchmark them against the same number of fixtures played in 2023-24.

The biggest improvers have been Orlando Pirates, who are a full 12 points better off than they were after their first eight games of last season. That is a massive jump and the reason why they are seemingly title contenders this campaign.

The second most improved side is Stellenbosch FC, who are five points better off, followed by Polokwane City, who have four more points than this stage last season.

Richards Bay may be in the relegation zone, but are actually two points better off than they were in the previous campaign after 11 matches.

The Nasreddine Nabi era at Kaizer Chiefs may be a slow burner, but the AmaKhosi are a point better off than last season after nine matches.

In all, only six sides have shown an improvement in points, while Chippa United have matched their tally after 10 games from 2023-24.

For the rest it has been a backwards step, including league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who are three points worse off at this stage.

AmaZulu (-1), Cape Town City (-2), TS Galaxy (-2) and Royal AM (-3) have also shown small backwards steps, but for others it has been more dramatic.

Lamontville Golden Arrows are seven points worse off after nine games, but the team that has suffered the most in 2024/25 is SuperSport United, who are eight points behind where they were after 11 games last term. This despite them winning their previous two games.
