Mapimpi cited for alleged eye gouging

Cell C Sharks and Springbok wing Makazole Mapimpi has been cited for the an alleged eye gouging incident in last Saturday’s Heineken Champions Cup clash with the Bordeaux Begles at HollywoodBets Kings Park.

The visiting captain Maxime Lucu drew the referee’s attention to what he claimed was eye contact in the 36th minute of the match. The incident was checked out by the TMO and on the big screen at the stadium but Lucu wasn’t specific enough about where the incident happened and there was no evidence of anything untoward on the replay.

However, the EPCR have received a citing complaint against Mapimpi, with a press release stating that “Mapimpi is alleged to have made contact with the eye area of the Union Bordeaux-Begles scrumhalf Maxime Lucu”. The complaint was made by the match Citing Commissioner, Brian Campsall of England.

Anthony Davies (England), the chair, Leon Lloyd, who is also from England, and Donal Courtney of Ireland have been appointed as the independent Disciplinary Committee that will oversee the hearing that will take place by video conference on Wednesday.
