DAY 1: Mgijima and Von Berg take down Warriors on day two
Aviwe Mgijima and Shaun von Berg were outstanding for Goldrush Boland on the second day of their CSA 4-Day Series match against the Dafabet Warriors at Boland Park on Friday. At stumps, the Warriors were on 107/5.
The Warriors had Sinethemba Qeshile (21*) and Andile Mogakane (7*) at the crease at stumps, and they trail Boland by 393 runs with five wickets in hand. The home side chalked a mammoth total of 500 in a first-innings performance that had three centuries. Two of those tons came on day one, and one was scored on day two.
Aviwe Mgijima scored a brilliant century, while Von Berg bagged a fantastic four-wicket haul.
First, Mgijima had little trouble picking up from where he left off on day one. The former WSB Western Province batter faced 93 deliveries to reach 50 runs on day one, and he did not change his approach when he came to the crease on the second day, facing 99 balls for his second 50. He faced a total of 172 deliveries to chalk his fifth first-class century. The 36-year-old joined Pieter Malan (106) and Grant Roelofsen (115) as the third centurion in the innings. Of the three, Mgijima scored the most runs, 122 from 204 deliveries.
One of the crucial partnerships for Boland as they marched to 500 was Mgijima's 63-run seventh-wicket partnership with Keith Dudgeon. The 29-year-old played a wonderful knock for his 46 off 73. Aya Gqamane added a vital 32 during his time in the middle.
After chalking an imposing total, Boland strengthened their position by taking early wickets in the Warriors innings. Shaun von Berg led the destruction of the Warriors top order with four wickets, two of which came in his first two overs of the innings.
The 38-year-old got Boland their breakthrough in his first over of the day. The experienced spinner trapped Jordan Hermann lbw just after the visitors had crossed the 50-run mark. One wicket turned into two when Aya Gqamane caught Jean du Plessis in his crease for another lbw dismissal five deliveries later, for only five runs. Von Berg struck again, dismissing Matthew Breetzke, nine balls after Du Plessis' departure.
Last week, Von Berg registered his 22nd four-wicket haul in first-class cricket. The seasoned campaigner carried that form into this contest. When he returned for his second spell, Von Berg dismissed Matthew de Villiers and Senuran Muthusamy to make it four wickets in the post-tea session. He finished the day with four wickets for 25 runs in 12 overs.
