The Down Touch Griffons maintained their unbeaten run in the Carling Currie Cup First Division with a 33-25 (halftime 22-7) victory over the Valke at the Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Saturday.

Both sides scored four tries with the Griffons’ left wing Gurshwin Wehr nabbing a brace with right wing Granwill Matthys and flanker Jean Pretorius adding their names to the scoresheet while scrumhalf Jaywinn Juries added two conversions and three penalties.

The Valke scored through left wing Jimmy Mpailane, flanker Dwayne Pienaar, replacement flanker Zander van der Merwe and lock Eddie Evans with flyhalf Reuben Liebenberg adding a conversion alongside fullback Josh Vermeulen’s solitary penalty.

The scores could have been a lot close had Vermeulen and Liebenberg not missed three conversions while the Valke’s right wing, Godfrey Ramaboea, did not help the home side’s cause by being sent to the sin-bin midway through the second half, although each side scored three points during his absence.

SCORERS

Valke – Tries: Jimmy Mpailane, Dwayne Pienaar, Zander van der Merwe, Eddie Evans; Conversions: Ruben Liebenberg; Penalty: Josh Vermeulen

Down Touch Griffons – Tries: Gurshwin Wehr (2), Granwill Matthys, Jean Pretorius; Conversions: Jaywinn Juries (2); Penalties: Juries (3)
